Galaxidi is quiet in December, and that is rather the point. The summer crowds have gone, the harbour belongs to the fishing boats again, and the lanes between the captains’ houses are yours to wander.
The house in winter
When the weather turns we move breakfast indoors, either into the small reception hall beside the fireplace, or to one of the tables around the old well and the stone cistern, or into the room in the basement we set aside for it and filled with antiques.
Central heating runs in every room, and the beds are made up with proper blankets. Three of our six rooms sit under the restored painted ceilings of the first floor, which are worth the trip on their own.
What there is to do
Delphi is close enough for an unhurried morning, and the ski centre on Parnassos is an easy drive if there is snow. Closer to hand there is the Nautical and Ethnological Museum, the churches of St Nicholas and Agia Paraskevi, and the walk around the park to the quiet beach at the end of it.
